The Larch: A
walking simulator
The Larch is
a story about two brothers who have lost their father, that passed away at the
sawmill while working. Eric, the younger brother, is 15 years old and is sad
about his father’s death. Brad, the older brother at the age of 19, is also sad
but doesn’t let his brother see this as he his assuming the new role of
authority and trying to be a new father figure to Eric. A year later Eric is
still sad about the father’s death and Brad feels the need to stand up and try
to teach Eric to suck it up and some initiative. Brad gathers some of his
friends and kidnaps Eric on his way from school and take him to an abandoned
sawmill, the same sawmill that his father died in. At first Eric has no idea what’s
going and as far as he knows. Meanwhile in the far distance a bushfire is
brewing, both brother unaware of its coming destruction. As Eric is trying to
escape he can hear Brad’s friends screaming “Fire!” After this Eric can see
Brad desperately trying to get in whilst his friends are running. Brad
eventually runs in and helps Eric escape. Both of the brothers can only get out
by relying on each other. When they get out and get to a safe distance, they
hug lovingly. Brad apologises about trapping Eric in a burning building and
Eric responds by saying “I know you’re trying to be like dad but I just want
you to be my big bro.” They both shed a tear and finish hugging.
